The Antwerp based startup, Turbulent, who developed a new and efficient hydropower technique to deliver affordable, renewable energy, was elected as one of the best tech startups in the world by securing the 1st place at The Pitch Competition, during the Startup Nations Summit 2015 in Monterrey, México.
Turbulent represented Belgium among 30+ nominated young starters from around the world and was voted into the finals by a panel of leading investors and managers. Winning The Pitch Competition 2015 “is a great boost for Turbulent”, said Geert Slachmuylders, Co-Founder and CEO.
The startup is developing the next generation hydroelectric powerplant, based on biomimicry. These hydropower plants range from 1kW to 200kW and are being built using standard components combined with a specifically modelled propeller. Their competitive advantage lies in the use of natural flow principles to convert the river’s available energy into electricity. The team has already secured support from Start it@ KBC, iMinds, Startup Chile and KIC InnoEnergy within their first year of operations.
Turbulent was nominated by Startups.be as the Belgian representative for the Startup Nations Summit 2014, an annual meeting that gathers a network of startup community leaders and policymakers from around the world to help better enable high impact entrepreneurship.
